Temporary exhibition Miró i els Estats Units

The Joan Miró Foundation presents the temporary exhibition Miró and the United States, showcasing the artistic dialogue through which Miró engaged with his American peers. The exhibition features over 130 works by other artists who enriched Miró’s artistic discourse, alongside pieces from the Foundation’s own collection, distributed throughout the permanent exhibition galleries.

The challenge consisted in placing all the works coherently within the established exhibition layout while respecting their specific characteristics. Consequently, given the unique nature of the Constel·lacions series (which features paintings on the front and sketches and writing on the back) a display system was designed specifically for these pieces. The new exhibiton system consists of metal frames placed perpendicularly to the walls, allowing visitors to easily view both sides of the artworks. These light, white frames ensure the focus remains entirely on the art; the works are positioned away from the walls, enabling visitors to view them more comfortably. This spacing, the slender structure, and the varying heights of the pieces create a three-dimensional landscape within the gallery that echoes the concept of a constellation. All the works are oriented in the same direction, creating an element of surprise when visitors turn their heads to discover the back sides.

The complete Constel·lacions series had never before been exhibited in its entirety, nor in a way that allowed both sides to be viewed simultaneously (as they were originally intended to be seen). This design therefore represents a significant step forward in how Miró’s legacy is admired and perceived.
