Three bedrooms

The brief seemed impossible: to fit three bedrooms where originally there were only two. Achieving this required thinking in three dimensions. The proposal involves reorganizing the space by creating three geometrically distinct and clearly defined volumes: a prism on either side comprise the entrances to the existing bedrooms, with flush doors finished in the same gray tone as the volumes, allowing them to blend seamlessly into the composition. The central volume, by contrast, seeks to disappear; it is visually separated from the other two by a mirrored finish that creates a sense of spaciousness in the hallway.

The volumes intentionally don't reach up to the ceiling, revealing the beams and ceramic vaults that were exposed after the original dropped ceiling was removed. This increased the ceiling height by a few centimeters, making it possible to have the third bedroom at an elevated level. A staircase accessible from the hallway leads up to this raised bedroom. Built with cantilevered wooden treads and a tubular steel structure, it appears almost like a lightweight sculpture set against the three volumes that organize the space. One of the treads—colored blue—extends outward to form a desk. This blue hue, which also appears on the desk in one of the other bedrooms and the headboard of the raised bedroom, contrasts with the neutral tones of the surrounding materials.

At the upper level, the new bedroom receives natural light through upper interior windows that open onto one of the original bedrooms, without compromising privacy.

The area beneath the new raised bed accommodates functions that do not require significant headroom, such as the desk in one of the existing bedrooms and the bed in the other, since these are used while sitting or lying down. The rest of the space utilizes the full ceiling height, feeling almost unaffected by the fact that a new bedroom has been created out of thin air.
